Sidewalk Glacier

I was reminded of Mary's "Stink Eye" post yesterday. I have a great view of the sidewalk in front of of my window every day. With all of the beautiful (though perhaps too abundant) snow that had fallen in the past several weeks the sidewalk has become a hazardous area. No one from our store remembers it needs shovelling because they don't see it. The people who take care of snow removal are employed by the guy who is mad that our building isn't under his direction. That means the small stretch of sidewalk in front of our store is left snowy. As soon as I remember, I'll take a picture of what it looks like when the snow removal guy uses his machine to clean up part of the sidewalk and leaves a big pile of ice and snow in the middle of the walk. I like to think of it as abstract art.

Anyway, yesterday I saw someone carefully picking their way across the skating rink that is our sidewalk. She looked up just as I bent down to pick something up off the floor. When I came back up she was standing in the same position, waiting for me to look at her. I smiled and she gave me a dose of the stink eye. Then she made some shovelling motions and looked at me expectantly. All I could do was shrug my shoulders and look sympathtic. We don't have the equipment to remove 5 inches of ice from the sidewalk and I don't think our tiny shovels would handle it. She didn't like my answer and I got the stink eye again before she continued her careful trek to get over the sidewalk glacier and onto the scraped part of the walk. Oh, well.

people that do stuff like that deserve the bird. (I always do it with my hands under the desk...that way I get my frustrations out, but I'm not making any obscene gesture right at their face...even if they do deserve it.)
