My Calling in Life

A few weeks ago we got a call asking if we could come in for an interview with the bishop. We didn't think a lot about it at first and figured it was probably a get-to-know-you visit because he came in so recently and was serving at the MTC before the call. Then we realized that was silly because it would take forever for him to get to the whole ward that way. After that we figured one of us would get a new calling--no big deal. Once that little realization was made we were just fine. Until we thought about why both of us were being called in. Either both of us were getting new callings (unlikely because I've only been teaching in Relief Society for a few months) or one of us was getting a really nasty one and they wanted the spouse there to say they would be supportive of the call. Circumstances of people in the ward floated through my head and the fear mounted. One of the nastiest church callings has someone in it who has quite a bit on her plate right now and could probably use a break. There were a few days of being really nervous.

Time came for the interview and the bishop called my husband in first. I was relieved that the nasty call would not be for me, but wondered what was going to happen with him. When Eric came out he had an evil grin on his face and I wasn't sure what to make of it. I went in and the bishop asked me if I was worthy to accept a call. The fear came back at this point. I told him I was worthy and listened intently to everything he said. He told me what the Relief Society president had said when he told her he wanted me for something else. I breathed a huge sigh of relief because I knew I wasn't getting that nasty job. Almost as soon as that thought came to my mind, the next one jumped in, too. "Not Young Women. Please, please, please not Young Women. Please?" The bishop asked how I felt about Primary. That was a welcome question. Primary I can do and I am sooooo good with being there.

Primary really does seem to be my calling in life. My first calling in my parents' ward after I graduated from high school was the "children's class" teacher for Enrichment meeting. In our first married ward we were in the nursery from October to January. In January we started teaching the new sunbeams, who had been with us in nursery. In our next ward I was called in to be the Valiant girls' teacher and Achievement Day leader with my teaching partner. When we moved out of that ward and into the one we're in now I was called to be the music leader. I was released from that when the baby was born. After 3 or 4 months teaching in the Relief Society I am back in the Primary, this time as second counselor. I still have to figure out all my duties, but I love being back in primary. I'm so glad it's not Young Women.

That is so funny! I would rather be in Young Women's rather than Primary.

Congrats on the call, I'm glad it wasn't ward organist. I know that would't have been your first choice.

I was terrified when I got called to be the primary chorister. Literally in tears.
But after a few months I am finding out that I enjoy it.
Here's one thing that is helping me: the kids love anything that is on a stick. Signs, pictures, whatever. If it's on a stick it's more fun.
Congrats.
